BMM3113 ACADEMIC SKILLS AND STUDYING WITH CONFIDENCE

Introduction

Academic skills are a set of personal competencies, which are needed during education and in various aspects of life. This skill set helps students study, research, project and succeed in college and university. These skills play an important role during education or in an academic career and are critical to a student's success (Waltham International College, 2023c). This skill is a fundamental part of education, and students need to learn and grow. Reading ability is generally the ability to understand and retain textual information. This skill provides interest in problem-solving, information gathering, and new ideas or projections. Learning to think critically and analyse the world in a scientific manner along with research skills. Language skills include writing essays, creating reports, answering interviews and giving advice.

Student services

Waltham International College (WIC) is very welcoming to the student lifestyle and provides a different establishment for the development of students. WIC provides high-quality programs and services with the best surroundings and gives students the best experiences on campus. WIC has a student welfare team that provides support for non-academic issues. WIC also offers a single appointment to students to provide services related to finance funding and money management (Waltham International College, 2023c). WIC provides a wide range of e-resources of books including full-text journals. WIC offers different courses to students related to the development of academic English learning. WIC campus has the facilities of doctors and healthcare providers that provide emergency health care for the students on the campus (Waltham International College, 2023c). WIC has their facilities on campus related to mental health and wellbeing. These services offer short-term advice and support to students suffering from personal difficulties.

Students facilities

WIC provides induction for the new students before their new courses and provides them with information about the course. WIC helps students with courses and assessments in the induction programmes and provides different support services at the campus. WIC provides career guidance to the students provided by the field specialists and helps to search part part-time jobs. There are printing facilities for the students at the cost of 5p per page on the campus and Hands-out notes are provided free of cost during the classes (Waltham International College, 2023b). WIC classrooms have portable multimedia projectors and overhead projectors for better teaching. WIC provides virtual learning and interactive systems for individual students (Waltham International College, 2023b). This helps to provide better networking between the students and teacher and all learning materials are available both online and offline.

Students’ discounts

WIC provides students with a TOTUM membership that offers vouchers and discounts on different outlets across the UK. This membership card helped the students to complete the application at the time of convenience. WIC also provides oyster travel cards for full-time and part-time students. WIC provides students with UNiDAYS accounts that get discounts on food products and many more things across the UK (Waltham International College, 2023a). This also provided different services across the UK and with these accounts. The enrollment of students made online with TFL required a credit or debit card with fees of £20, student college enrollment ID and colour digital photo (Waltham International College, 2023a). These extra facilities cards provided by WIC help students to get discounts on ID application convenience. 

Employability and careers

WIC offers different employability services to the students to shape their careers. This service provides different professional information and different guidance and advice at the time of graduation. WIC has strong relationships with different recruitment agencies that also create different student employment opportunities on campus (Waltham International College, 2023). WIC also assists in different planning care objectives for the students and services regarding the advertised vacancies for graduate students. WIC offers different services to students and prepares professional CVs for the students and training on effective interview techniques (Waltham International College, 2023). This also helps to promote different services for the students related to employment and careers after graduation. WIC is equipped with better employment options and potential salaries. The courses provided in WIC developed considering the public and private enterprises that also create strong bonds between professional bodies.

Reflection

I am a student of WIC and enhance my academic skills that are beneficial for my professional career. I also allowed different books from the online and offline library that helped to get in-depth knowledge. I can improve my academic English skills from the collagen that is essential for getting multinational jobs. The expert teachers of WIC helped me to improve my overall communication skills under the skill development programmes. The 24-hour high-speed internet facilities on the campus for every student will help me to read journals and be up to date with the present scenario. The expert teachers will assist me in developing my CVs improving my communication skills and getting better job opportunities in the future. I can enhance my future skills with the advancement of professional development and getting better placement opportunities in public or private opportunities.                         

Recommendation

WIC can implement academic advising systems to help students plan their courses and set goals. WIC can provide resume-building and interview preparation to help students post-graduation. WIC can offer tutoring programmes and group studies to assist in the courses. WIC can accommodate students to provide feedback and give suggestions for improving services on the campus. WIC can offer fitness centres and recreational facilities to promote physical well-being. WIC can ensure comfortable housing options for students on and off campus. WIC can create a digital platform to provide discounts and deals for students. 

Conclusion

It can be concluded that WIC considers a more appropriate strategy to maintain their college and provides unique services to the students. The facilities provided by Waltham International College and Brockenhurst College can be compared. The facilities provided in the Brockenhurst College with better standard of facilities on the campus compared to the WIC. The Brockenhurst College is more focused on the placement of students and WIC also be more focused on the placements.  Brockenhurst College provides comfortable housing options for students on the campus and WIC should be more focused on the stay options for students on the campus.
